Take out liability insurance

Take out liability insurance

Almost everyone in the Netherlands has liability insurance. Liability insurance reimburses the damage you cause to other people's belongings, such as a vase that you accidentally knock over at a friend's house. Or if someone else is injured through your fault. With our Liability Insurance, large and small damages to others are comprehensively covered. You take out liability insurance because you want to protect yourself and your family against the risk of liability. You can be held responsible if someone is injured through your fault. But also if you accidentally damage other people's belongings. Resulting in a claim for damages. Liability insurance is not mandatory, but it is very useful.

Examples of why you need liability insurance

  • When you accidentally break something from someone else, for example a vase or glasses
  • When you damage someone's health, for example if someone falls on the floor because of you
  • When your pet (for example a dog) does something to someone else, for example if he bites another person

The liability insurance does not cover:

  • damage to rented items
  • damage you have caused intentionally
  • damage caused during your work
  • damage you inflict on your family members
  • damage you inflict with your car or other motor vehicle

How much does liability insurance cost?

That differs. If you only insure yourself, it costs about 50 euros per year. When you and your partner are both insured, it is about 85 euros per year. When you insure the whole family, so including your children, it is about 100 euros per year.

Up to what amount are you insured?

Your liability insurance applies in most cases to damage that you cause all over the world. So even if you are traveling abroad, you are covered.

You can often choose the amount for which you are insured. The higher you are insured, the more premium you pay. Usually you can choose from an insured amount of 1,250,000 and 2,500,000 euros.
