Investing in stocks is very popular in the Netherlands

By far most people in the Netherlands invest in stocks. In the past, people used to invest through their bank. This has changed completely in recent years. The so-called low-cost internet brokers have completely taken over the investment market. These internet brokers have a number of advantages over banks;

  • Internet brokers offer more different products than banks
  • The number of countries and markets in which investments can be made is greater
  • The costs are much lower than with traditional banks

The largest internet brokers in The Netherlands

Throughout the years, there have been many changes in who is the largest internet broker. Currently, DeGiro is the largest broker in the Netherlands. They started out as a price fighter, but their service and the user-friendliness of the platform are also very good nowadays.

The second largest broker is Saxobank. Until recently, this internet broker was called Binck. Binck was the biggest for years. Recently, they were taken over by Saxobank. This broker has been known for years for the ease of use of its platform.

Lynx, Todays and Mexem use the platform of Interactive Brokers. This large US broker is known for its reliable platform, low costs and large supply of shares. Lynx, Todays, Lynx and Mexem offer the US broker in Dutch with their own service and costs.

Bux is known for its product Bux Zero. This means that you can place share orders without transaction costs. Once a day orders are executed for free. This takes place in the afternoon between 4pm and 5pm.

Etoro is a new broker in the Netherlands. The US broker came recently over to The Netherlands.

ING, Rabobank and Abn Amro are the 3 biggest banks in the Netherlands. It is easy if you have a bank account with them to also do your investments with them. However, the costs and the offer of products with these 3 banks are a lot less interesting than with an Internet broker.
